Cardiomyopathy

Cardiomyopathy refers to disease within the heart muscle, which typically involves a weak heart muscle that cannot fully perform its ability to pump blood to the rest of the body. This poor muscle tone in the heart can be caused by a heart attack or blockage in the arteries (ischemic cardiomyopathy) or from a certain medication, virus or inflammation (non-ischemic cardiomyopathy). In a healthy heart, the heart pumps 55%-65% of the blood inside the heart to the rest of the body. However, in patients with cardiomyopathy, the ejection fraction is at 50% or below.

At Corrielus Cardiology, we are equipped to diagnose the specific type of your cardiomyopathy, which may involve an enlarged muscle dilated (dilated cardiomyopathy), a thickened muscle (hypertonic cardiomyopathy) or rigid heart muscle (restrictive cardiomyopathy). Our Philadelphia center uses an integrative, team approach that focuses on non-invasive cardiovascular care. Your cardiomyopathy treatment will be guided by Dr. Corrielus, a leading cardiologist who carries over 16 years of experience in treating cardiovascular conditions.

Symptoms & Causes of Cardiomyopathy

There are various causes of cardiomyopathy and it is important to determine the cause before proper treatment can be initiated. If left untreated, cardiomyopathy can progress and cause the heart to become weaker with an impaired ability to maintain healthy electrical rhythm. Consequently, patients may suffer from arrhythmias, heart valve issues and even heart failure

If you have the following symptoms of cardiomyopathy, trust Corrielus Cardiology for exceptional care:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Edema or swelling
  • Fatigue, especially with exertion
  • Shortness of breath when lying down

Treatment of Cardiomyopathy

Dr. Corrielus will recommend a treatment plan based on your specific type of cardiomyopathy, the severity of your symptoms, your age and your overall wellness. We will work with you to help you manage any underlying condition that is causing your symptoms as well as implement methods to stop the progression of cardiomyopathy. We want to help patients avoid serious complications such as sudden cardiac arrest and help them live a normal, high-quality life. Our unique cardiology center focuses on non-surgical care to benefit your long-term wellbeing. Your treatment may include making lifestyle changes to improve your heart health as well as adding certain heart medications to support your heart’s function.
