Renovascular Conditions

The renal arteries carry oxygen and nutrient rich blood from the heart to the kidneys. When these arteries become blocked, inflamed or damaged, a renovascular condition is suggested. Corrielus Cardiology offers accurate diagnosis and effective treatment for renovascular conditions. We understand the importance of how lifestyle changes and other non-invasive measures can restore health to your heart and surrounding arteries.

Renovascular conditions can be a consequence of atherosclerosis, renal artery aneurysms, fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD), and vasculitis (inflammation of the arteries). When the renal arteries become blocked, the condition is termed renal artery stenosis. This means your kidneys are not getting enough blood or oxygen to function in a healthy manner.

Symptoms & Causes of a Renovascular Conditions

Unfortunately, renovascular conditions don't always produce noticeable symptoms, especially when it comes to renal artery stenosis. Left untreated, patients may eventually suffer from serious high blood pressure and kidney damage as a result of their renovascular condition. We know that severe high blood pressure is also associated with cardiac failure, stroke and other significant health threats. If you experience flank pain or blood in the urine, this may be a warning sign of renal artery aneurysms, fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) or vasculitis.

In a large majority of cases, renovascular problems originate with atherosclerosis, or plaque build up in the renal arteries. While the arteries do harden with age, a healthy diet and lifestyle can dramatically reduce the presence of plaque, which is composed of cholesterol, calcium and fibrous tissue. Patients who smoke, have high cholesterol or unmanaged diabetes are also at greater risk for atherosclerosis and subsequent renovascular disease.

Treatment of a Renovascular Conditions

Unless you are diagnosed with severe blockage or peripheral artery disease, your renovascular condition can often be reversed with a change in lifestyle.
