Echocardiography refers to the use of ultrasound technology to evaluate the function and structure of the heart. Corrielus Cardiology proudly offers a number of proven echocardiogram techniques in order to give patients the most accurate depiction of their heart health. Our Philadelphia wellness center is led by a leading cardiologist, Dr. Sanul Corrielus, who values the use of non-invasive testing and treatments in order to promote better heart health and overall wellness.
By undergoing an echocardiogram, Dr. Corrielus is able to view intricate structural details and pumping actions of the heart by means of ultrasound. Ultrasound uses a transducer that emits high frequency sound waves that “echo” off of the cardiac structures to create computer images of heart, including the blood flow across the valves. Depending on your specific risk factors and symptoms, different types of echocardiograms can be used. In general, we can use an echocardiogram to diagnose a number of heart conditions, ranging from atherosclerosis and aneurysm to cardiomyopathy and valvular heart disease.
Transthoracic Echocardiogram
Transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) is the most common echocardiography technique. This method acquires images of the heart by moving a transducer (ultrasound wand) to various locations on the patient’s chest or abdomen.
Transesophageal Echocardiogram
Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE) represents a highly effective type of echocardiogram that enables Dr. Corrielus to evaluate the heart’s structures and blood flow by using a tube that is placed into the esophagus. TEE produces remarkably clear images that are not inhibited by traditional ultrasound methods through the chest wall.
Echocardiographic Stress Testing
When an echocardiogram is performed before and after the heart is “stressed,” it is referred to as echocardiographic stress testing. Stress is induced on the heart in a safe, controlled environment by either having the patient exercise or by injecting medication to accelerate the patient’s heart rate. This type of test is commonly done to measure the rate of blood flow to the heart.
