While pacemakers and defibrillators require a very minor surgical procedure, they can be life-saving devices for certain people. A pacemaker is designed for patients who have an abnormally slow heart rate. When their heart rate gets too low or needs to be “paced”, the pacemaker emits an electrical impulse to stimulate a faster and more steady heart rhythm. A defibrillator may be necessary for people who have an irregular or too fast heartbeat that is putting them at risk for sudden cardiac death. The implantable cardioverter defibrillator, or ICD, detects the abnormal heart rhythm and shocks the heart back to its normal rhythm before heart failure occurs. Most ICDs have a built-in pacemaker as well.
Corrielus Cardiology is proud to offer pacemakers and defibrillators as part of our comprehensive cardiology care services in Philadelphia. We take your heart health seriously, and we are equipped to help patients who are at high risk for life-threatening heart failure.
Pacemakers involve a minimally-invasive procedure to implant the device just under the skin surface. A small incision is made just below the collar bone to insert the pacemaker and expose the vein. A tiny needle poke into this vein can introduce the pacemaker wire (leads) so that it can send the necessary signals to the heart. At Corrielus Cardiology, you can expect your pacemaker procedure to last about 1-2 hours. We will give you medication for mild sedation but general anesthesia is typically not necessary. Once the device is implanted, it can pace the heart as well as monitor arrhythmias.
A defibrillator procedure is performed in much the same way as a pacemaker procedure. You will be relaxed but awake during the procedure and also given a local anesthetic at the site of the incision. Defibrillators are implanted just below the left collarbone, where the wires will be directed down towards the heart via veins. Rest assured that we will monitor your heart rate and blood pressure throughout the procedure.
After your procedure, Dr. Corrielus will make sure you have a clear understanding as to how your defibrillator and pacemaker works. If you have questions or concerns about your implant, please do not hesitate to contact us.
